About

Andrew Mitchell is a multidisciplinary artist and photographer based in the UK, whose practice bridges analogue and digital realms. He explores the poetic tension between nostalgia and innovation using vintage digital cameras, alongside digital and AI technologies.

His work, Pollice Verso, appeared as part of the No More Nowt ‘Owtside’ exhibition and Echoes of Transistion as part of the Baltic Open Submission 2024.

A crumbling social club is juxtaposed against an AI generated club

His WMC.NE series offers a playfully affectionate reimagining of North East English social clubs, interweaving working‑class culture and social commentary. This ongoing exploration of an alternative history of social clubs in the North East of England, presented through a suite of AI generated images, capture the essence of these once vibrant places.

The project focuses on the people, places, and pints, both past and present, celebrating the unique atmosphere, community and characters found in thousands of successful social clubs in a North East not too dissimilar to our own.

An elderly, smiling back, in front of run down, utilitarian house, gives a cheery thumbs up

In 'The Album', Andrew collaborated with Right Up Our Street and the Doncaster Conversation Club; blending AI generated imagery with community narratives to create a sensitive, co‑creative exploration of identity and belonging of refugees and asylum seekers. This work, in conjunction with other artists, was made real in the second phase of work. Breathing life into the orginal generative pieces.

His artistic curiosity also extends into writing; blending prose, poetry, and reflective storytelling. His process is defined by experimentation: from capturing urban and rural scenes to algorithmic image-making. His work exists at the intersection of memory, technology, and place; inviting viewers to engage with both the familiar and the yet‑to‑be‑imagined.
